Our Roots

Thuy Luu was a refugee of the Vietnam War and came to the US in 1975. At just 20 years old, she arrived on American soil with a small box of personal belongings and hope at starting a brand new life. Over the next five years she learned English, was accepted into college, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Moorehead State University. She went on to raise two children and build a modest career at the same company for nearly 25 years. Thuy lived to fulfill her dream of starting a new life - a life that included pursuing higher education, starting a family of her own, and giving back to the community in hopes of giving others a second chance at life. In 2019, Thuy was called Home after a brief battle with cancer. She was 63 years old.

Be All The Things was created with the modern student in mind. While women and people of color (POC) continue to fight for equality in the professional and social systems, we still have a long way to go. Our goal is to allow women and POC the opportunity to explore their purpose through higher education while also providing financial assistance via the scholarship.

Be All the Things - The Scholarship was founded in 2017 by Thuy’s daughter, Quyen Hom. She works alongside her brother, Andrew Luu, and their entire family to continue their mother’s legacy of giving. The family’s goal is to create a lasting impact on non-traditional students + students of color at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Thuy’s memory.
